A Helping Hand for SMEs in the Construction Industry

A new project is currently underway in Carmarthenshire, which aims to support small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in the construction industry.

The Construction Technology and Development Support Centre has been funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to offer free advice on new technologies, products, materials and regulations within the construction industry.

Based on the Ammanford Campus of Coleg Sir Gār, the centre has already helped companies by organising free seminars and training on issues such as waste management, water quality control, sustainable energy and asbestos awareness. Key companies are also being approached to display equipment and new technologies at the centre to enable SMEs to access and learn about the very latest machinery and industry tools.

As well as arranging seminars and information days, the centre is an open-house for SMEs wanting to find out more about the latest changes in regulations, practices and initiatives within the industry which may be taking up a lot of company time yet could equally affect business. As a result, a drop-in facility is available during extended office hours at the centre.

SMEs are encouraged to come and talk to staff to discuss their needs - whatever they may be - the centre will try and help wherever possible. Whether it’s a specific training need for example gas / oil / electric / solar , support requirement, concerns over new regulations, or information on available grants, staff will be happy to talk about any concerns companies would like to discuss and even find out more information and research on behalf of the company.

Emerging industry specific software such as architectural desktop programs and plotters are freely available at the centre and as a result, it is hoped that SMEs begin to meet and network with each other, offering opportunities to work collaboratively, possibly enhancing opportunities to secure more contracts.
